Government Science Park
MODERNISING A SCIENCE ESTATE
Pascall+Watson undertook the masterplanning of a new Science Park that led to a subsequent project to accommodate 1,200 research scientists and support staff. We fully developed all aspects of the building fabric and internal spaces, in close liaison with the client stakeholders, so they can be sure a fully integrated solution satisfying complex user needs is achieved with the challenging budgetary Limits.
Located in a disused area on a brownfield industrial site, we developed plans and detailed designs to achieve a best practice sustainable solution. This was fully supported by the client, who was keen to gain a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. This was achieved by restricting mechanical ventilation to the offices, allowing for a passive air strategy to the atrium and Grade A internal finishes. The design was for two phases, each building being 8,000m² of open plan offices for 600 design and research people. The building incorporated specialist computing and A/V conference facilities and breakout spaces.
The project successfully developed all aspects of the building’s fabric and internal spaces, in close liaison with the client stakeholders, to ensure a fully integrated solution that satisfied complex user needs within the challenging budgetary limits. Arranged on four levels either side of a central atrium ‘street’ overlooked by upper levels of circulation balconies and crossed by bridges, providing the opportunity for community Activities.
