URUMQUI AIRPORT

A KEY GATEWAY BETWEEN CHINA AND CENTRAL ASIA

Pascall+Watson were invited to participate in the international competition to design a second terminal for Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport.

Ürümqi is the regional capital of the remote north-western Xinjiang province and a leading centre for commerce and culture  located on the historic ‘Silk Road’. The Chinese government determined that a substantial investment was required into the region’s airport infrastructure to position Xinjiang as a key gateway between China and Central Asia.

Rather than designing a second terminal, our fnal masterplan featured a new, single facility designed to accommodate both the first and second expansion stages within one building.

Our scheme demonstrated benefits not just in terms of operational and cost efficiency, but also in terms of passenger experience both airside and landside.

Inspiration for the design came from the local landscape referencing the surrounding hills, valleys and plains. The materials palette developed for the building’s interior reflects the textures and patterns of traditional silk fabrics, a major trading component of the region.

“Xinjiang’s landscapes are surprising in their rugged beauty and rich in cultural associations. The designs striking architectural form combined with an efficient use of space creates a symbolic aviation hub for China’s largest and western-most province.”
