MEXICO CITY AIRPORT

a Seamless Journey in a Natural Oasis

Our competition design for Mexico City Airport, created in collaboration with Sordo Madaleno, EC Harris, and Aertec, delivers an immersive and distinctive experience for travellers from the moment they step inside.

Flooded with calming natural light and framed by lush gardens and dramatic mountain views, the terminal offers a refreshing environment that simplifies wayfinding and encourages seamless movement. Minimal level changes, wide passenger flows, and intuitive layouts prioritise comfort and accessibility for all.

Designed to alleviate congestion at the 60-year-old airport, the terminal combines functionality and operational flexibility. Its innovative central spine integrates a double-level retail environment that ensures clear sightlines while maximising exposure to retail opportunities.

Sustainability is a core feature of the scheme, targeting low carbon emissions through passive design principles. High-efficiency building shells, displacement ventilation, water-saving strategies, and alternative energy sources underpin its environmentally responsible approach.

By balancing beauty, efficiency, and sustainability, our design transforms the travel experience while addressing the future needs of one of the world’s busiest airports.

“Our design for Mexico City Airport combines nature, innovation, and sustainability to create a refreshing, intuitive, and seamless passenger experience. Working for and with the Mexican people, and in Mexico itself, has been a career highlight.”
