AN EVOCATIVE GATEWAY TO LYON
Pascall+Watson, as part of a consortium led by Vinci GTM Construction, were invited by Aeroport de Lyon to participate in the design and build competition for a new 65,000 m² terminal at Lyon-Saint-Exupéry Airport. As part of a €150m investment programme, the project contemplates the development of Terminals 1 and 3, replacing a temporary terminal structure and creating the much-needed additional capacity for both traditional and low-cost carriers.
The design of the new terminal took its inspiration from the nearby mountains: the jagged formation of the roof enables natural light to penetrate deep into the heart of the building washing the generous passenger dwell areas beneath. Expansive glazed facades shape the building’s envelope, allowing passengers to enjoy views of the city and the aircraft. The layout connected to the existing terminals, piers and satellite, providing passengers with an enjoyable yet simple and intuitive journey through the airport.
“Our architectural vision was to create a sustainable and iconic gateway that not only enhances capacity but also celebrates Lyon’s rich cultural and culinary heritage. By drawing inspiration from the surrounding mountains and maximizing natural light through the carefully faceted roof design, we’ve created a terminal that is both functional and welcoming.”
