BOLOGNA AIRPORT
A COHESIVE STRATEGY FOR EXPANSION AND GROWTH
Pascall+Watson developed a comprehensive masterplan that maximizes the use of existing facilities while integrating significant new infrastructure. Key elements of the plan include a new international departures lounge, a new pier, upgraded kerbside facilities, and a dedicated arrivals building. The masterplan supports phased growth, allowing for efficient and flexible capital investment.
Following the masterplan study, Pascall+Watson was commissioned to design the first phase of the airport’s expansion. This phase includes new airside waiting capacity, airline lounge facilities, additional gates, arrivals spaces, extensive retail offerings, and operational functions.
A standout feature of the concept is the double-level International Departures Lounge. Inspired by the local context, this bright, naturally lit space features high-end retail, ample passenger seating and interactive facilities to create a relaxing and enjoyable experience. The luxury retail offering, designed around the Italian Galleria concept, promotes intuitive passenger flow between levels and incorporates an engaging media experience. The retail mix has been carefully curated to align with passenger movement patterns, maximizing visibility, accessibility, and revenue potential. Pascall+Watson’s contemporary designs celebrate Bologna’s local identity, drawing inspiration from its reputation as Italy’s culinary capital and a hub for luxury automotive excellence. These references, combined with innovative design solutions, reflect the region’s character and its rapid growth in tourism.
