STANSTED airport

DEVELOPING AND EXPANDING AN ICON

Pascall+Watson have been involved with the evolution of London Stansted Airport for over three decades, undertaking our first project there in 1988. We have completed numerous schemes of varying scale and complexity, providing services ranging from masterplanning, airport planning, concept, detail and production design, wayfinding, and construction support.

Respect for the airport’s strong design philosophy, which features fully glazed facades revealing the inner life of the building and guiding passenger flows, informs every project we undertake.

Our work on extending the existing terminal building—doubling its capacity—created a pioneering Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) strategy that delivered the project at a significantly reduced cost, far quicker than originally programmed, and in an inherently safer environment.

In 2018, we were awarded the role of Design Team Leaders for the airport’s £600 million Transformation Programme, the biggest single investment since the airport’s inception. This infrastructure solution will accommodate up to 43 million passengers per annum (mppa).

The project, granted planning permission in 2024, will significantly improve passengers’ experience at each stage of their journey from check-in to immigration. It will deliver a major extension to the existing retail and departures lounge, security hall, an airfield taxiway upgrade, and an overhaul of gate rooms, boosting capacity and comfort for passengers before boarding.

Our work at Stansted supports a strategic long-term vision to provide a state-of-the-art terminal, significantly increasing the airport’s market reach and improving the passenger experience.
