JOMO KENYATTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
AN ICONIC STATEMENT FOR KENYA
Kenya Airports Authority required a world-class terminal complex with fast-track, phased delivery to accommodate the projected passenger growth of Kenya Airways. The 178,000m² terminal, designed by Pascall+Watson, is situated west of the current terminal in a green field location optimally located to minimise airside circulation in a twin parallel runway configuration. The landside masterplan incorporated a surface transport interchange with safeguarding for a new rail terminus and extensive commercial facilities.
The terminal was designed with an initial capacity of 12 million passengers per annum (mppa), expandable to 30mppa with a layout optimised to serve as a hub facility for Kenya Airways. The layout addressed the specific needs of transfer passengers as well as Nairobi’s unique baggage and cargo handling requirements.
The project delivers immediate capacity aligned with air traffic forecasts, supporting efficient hub operations, enhanced safety and security, and increased revenue opportunities for the airport operator. The architectural and structural building design is carefully planned to enable incremental growth in discrete construction phases and provide the inherent flexibility to adapt to changes in current or future traffic demands.
The terminal’s design takes into account the unique setting and climate, providing an efficient yet memorable experience for passengers. A palette of bold, simple forms, contemporary natural materials, and carefully controlled light and colour creates a distinctive architectural environment. The design embodies a holistic and iconic statement for Kenya Airports Authority, meeting the needs of modern Nairobi while providing passengers with the highest levels of comfort in a climate-responsive facility.
"We want to make Jomo Kenyatta International Airport the most convenient, comfortable and secure airport in Africa, and make Kenya the most attractive air hub in the continent."
