PULKOVO AIRPORT
ILLUMINATING THE HEART OF THE TERMINAL
Terminal 1: Pascall+Watson acted as the architecture and airport planning lead on behalf of a Fraport led consortium responsible for the Public Private Partnership redevelopment of the airport. The centre piece was a new terminal building based on a Grimshaw Architects competition-winning design for which Pascall+ Watson refined the operational concept and were responsible for delivering construction tender design. The new 150,000m² multi-level terminal processor building and double sided pier forms the first phase of a staged masterplan to increase the capacity of the airport to 17mppa. Pascall+Watson reduced the terminal footprint by 27% whilst retaining the aspired levels of service and functionality.
The striking terminal roof and envelope were designed to accommodate the extremes of the climate experienced in Russia, with structural trees positioned to withstand the huge weight load from falling snow in the winter months. The soffit and rooflights were optimised to introduce natural light into the heart of the building, particularly during the short days winter days that occur in this Northernly latitude.
Masterplan: The success of the new Terminal 1 led to increased passenger growth, beyond expectations, and created a greater than expected demand for capacity. Pascall+Watson were appointed by the airport to develop a revised masterplan for the airport that would define a larger than expected second phase and possible additional phases to be contemplated within the concession period.Pascall+Watson scrutinised the existing masterplan, examined the available and projected capacity requirements of the facilities, and reviewed the existing arrangements of the landside, forecourts, terminal buildings and airside facilities. The outputs of these analytical exercises resulted in short-term solutions for the airport, up to 2020, medium-term solutions, up to 2025/30, as well as a final plan for the end of the concessionaire period in 2045.
“The new terminal depicts the beauty and spirit of Saint Petersburg, a world heritage city and the business capital of Europe.”
