A CATALYST FOR INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The new Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London generates enhanced areas for students incorporating fluid teaching and research facilities, it links ICL with the Royal College of Art; establishing a consolidated hub for creative minds.
The building, previously being used as office space has been remodelled to provide state-of-the-art contemporary learning facilities and associated public realm space. The new provision includes workshops, design studios and laboratories, a 3D printing and robotics laboratory, seminar rooms, a large lecture theatre, research studios, presentation space, office and formal meeting spaces, research studios, creative breakout areas, exhibition spaces and a café at ground floor level.
Pascall+Watson approached the building with conservation in mind and as if it were Grade II* listed, and our design work has reflected this. The exterior of the building has been retained given its historical significance on a prestigious site. The technical internal upgrades have been informed by the building’s historic nature. To ensure our designs aligned with the considerations of working with historic buildings, we appointed a Heritage Consultant at the project outset provide advice.
Pascall+Watson undertook RIBA stages 0–6 of this project, designed to a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.
“A world-leading school for a new kind of engineer who will lead the next technological revolution.”
