LONDON METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY (SUPERLAB)

CUTTING-EDGE FACILITIES WITH A COMMUNITY AND SUSTAINABLE APPROACH

In order to address the decline in science studies and attract exceptional students, London Metropolitan University sought to create an impressive learning environment by developing a state-of-the-art scientific facility. Investing over £30 million, the Science Centre was established as the world’s first “Super Laboratory,” providing unparalleled educational resources for students pursuing biomedical, pharmaceutical, sports and exercise, and human nutrition sciences.

Pascall+Watson were appointed, following an international design competition, for RIBA Stages 0–6 of this new build sports and science centre. Our team designed London’s first BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated laboratory facility.

The facility has an envelope specified with a Grade A material palette. It exceeds thermal regulations by 15% and scored maximum credits for the air seal requirements under BREEAM. The building’s architecture allows for maximum daylight distribution, to reduce reliance on mechanical lighting.

Since completion, students and staff have had a resounding enthusiasm for both the building’s design and the activities undertaken within. The new centre has attracted a greater number of students and has provided a platform for research funding to be obtained.

"The Lab really sets a new high standard for the Civic contribution that higher education providers can make across key areas of the capital”
