QUEEN MARY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

providing high-quality learning and research environments

The engineering department at QMUL is at the heart of a 5-storey 1960s building located within the dense urban environment of the university’s Mile End campus and required a transformation to upgrade the facilities in line with the university’s aspirations to provide high-quality learning and research environments, and to decarbonise the building.

The extensive remodelling, undertaken in a series of projects over the last 8 years, provides better visual connections with adjacent facilities, with central teaching spaces and high specification specialist wet and dry laboratories. The engineering department is being used to set the benchmark for the subsequent development phases across the campus.

Works have included internal and external remodelling and continued development with newly refurbished learning environments. Central to our designs is a sense of openness, cohesion with the existing building and inbuilt future flexibility; ensuring the facilities can readily respond to subsequent departmental developments. The fast-track schemes are delivered with minimum disruption with adjacent facilities remaining fully operational throughout construction. As well as providing enhanced research and laboratory amenities, improved environmental control and updated services provision, the projects also include improvements to the building’s thermal fabric and services, to achieve the university’s aspiration to reduce carbon emissions.

The spaces created are bright, open and welcoming, providing both functional and flexible specialist teaching environments "
