CATANIA FONTAnaROSSA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF SUSTAINABLE AIRPORT DESIGNS

Pascall+Watson designed an innovative terminal concept for Catania Airport focusing on efficiency, sustainability, and passenger experience.

We were originally engaged to develop a concept design, but following further discussions, the client requested that Pascall+Watson, along with our partners, re-visit the initial concept design with a view to taking it through to Scheme & Delivery stages.

To realise Società Aeroporto Catania (SAC) vision for an efficient and intuitive passenger terminal, Pascall+Watson’s architectural strategy delivers a first of-its-kind design, with sustainability, futureproofing and passenger experience at its heart.

The transformational project is the airport’s most substantial investment to date. Key themes include seamless connectivity, smooth vertical travel, harmonious forecourt environment, and efficient public transport links. Sustainability elements include a highly insulated curved roof, renewable materials, and efficient rainwater collection systems. The design incorporates local materials and influences to connect with Catania and Sicily’s environment and supports Catania’s goal to become a sustainable multi-modal transport hub.

“ We championed our sustainability principles on Catania Airport. We designed a hybrid CLT and steel structure that significantly reduced in embodied carbon”
